The starter was spinning but not engaging the flywheel. When I turn the key the starter solenoid gear extends and engages the outboard's flywheel, but it won't turn the flywheel. I'm thinking about just hooking up a big ol' solenoid with a cut off switch to the starter anf if it keeps acting up, just taking it out of the equation. Re-charged the battery and now I get the starter motor spinning very fast ("whirring" sound), but it does not seem to engage the flywheel. The 300 John Deere garden tractors are really fun to repower. Then check the battery voltage on the posts when the starter is operating.
